One of Japan's 3 most finest onsen, along with Arima and Kusatsu.
It is just located about 45 minutes away from Takayama or 90 minutes from Nagoya.

Type of Onsen:
The onsen of Gero gushes out at the high temperature of 84°C. Its nature is alkaline simple hot spring which is colorless, transparent with a faint aroma. Gero onsen is said to be good for relieving neuralgia, muscle pain and fatigue.
Gero onsen is also renowned as ' Bijin no Yu', which means 'The bath of beauty'. It removes the old dead skin cells and boost the metabolism, leaving you silky and soft skin with glow. Its beneficial effects have attracted the attention of medical practitioners and rehabilitation developers to study the onsen water for medical use.

Things to Do:
Strolling through out the town, you can find many souvenir shops and also some free ashi-yu (foot onsen). You can just roll up your trousers and soak your exhausted feet into the foot onsen. There's one where you can enjoy some onsen eggs and onsen egg ice cream; another ashi-yu features the sarubobo versions of Japan's traditional Seven Gods of Fortune; another is of european fountain style foot bath with a sculpture of Venous.
Funsen Ike is a free-to-use open-air onsen located next to Gero Bridge along the banks of the Hida River. You can enjoy a soak while indulging in the stunning view of mountains and river. Swimsuit is needed to enter this onsen.
Ideyu Morning Market is opened from mid March to late November. The street is lined with stalls selling local producsts, local sake, and more. It is a good way to enjoy interacting with the locals. After the market, you can climb up the hill behind Gero Onsen Museum to the Onsenji Temple where you can enjoy fantastic views of the valley.
Located just above town is the Gero Onsen Gassho Village of gassho-zukuri farmhouses which are traditional steep roofed houses from the Shirakawago region. You can visit the houses, see performances, or participate in traditional folk art here.
